How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet

A bracelet should feel comfortable as well as look good. Before choosing a size, take a wrist measurement and compare it with the guidance for the particular design you want.

What you need

Use a flexible measuring tape. If you do not have one, use a strip of paper or non-stretch string, a pen and a ruler.

Measure in three steps

  1. Wrap the tape around the wrist where you plan to wear the bracelet. Keep it close to the skin without squeezing.
  2. Read the measurement where the tape meets. With paper or string, mark the meeting point, lay it flat and measure it against a ruler.
  3. Repeat once to check the result, and record the measurement in centimeters or inches.

For example, if the marked strip measures 16 cm, your wrist measurement is 16 cm. That is the starting point for choosing a bracelet, rather than an automatic instruction to order a 16 cm bracelet.

Understand what the listing measures

A listing may give the recommended wrist size, the bracelet's length or its internal circumference. These measurements are different. Bead size and construction also affect how a bracelet sits, so avoid applying one sizing rule to every design.

Check whether the bracelet is elastic, adjustable or fastened with a clasp. An elastic design still needs a suitable size; stretch should not be treated as a substitute for fit.

Choose your preferred feel

Think about whether you like a close fit or a little movement. Consider whether you will wear it beside a watch or stack it with other bracelets. Follow the item's own sizing guidance, and ask for help if you fall between the stated sizes.

Buying a gift?

Ask for the recipient's wrist measurement when possible. If you are using an existing bracelet as a reference, explain its construction and how you measured it so the seller can make a useful comparison.
