How to Care for Gemstone and Silver-Plated Jewelry

A bracelet can combine several materials, each with different care needs. Check the instructions for your particular piece before cleaning it, especially if it includes gemstone beads, plating, shell, coatings or elastic.

Begin with a gentle wipe

For everyday care, gently wipe the piece with a clean, soft, dry, untreated cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing. If dirt remains, ask for cleaning guidance for the exact materials instead of trying a stronger cleaner.

Take care with silver-plated details

Silver-plated jewelry has a surface layer of silver over another material. Do not assume a cleaning product intended for solid silver is suitable for a plated piece. Avoid abrasive pastes and treated polishing cloths unless the maker confirms they are appropriate.

Before using any commercial cleaner, check its instructions against every material in the bracelet. A product suitable for the metal may still be unsuitable for the beads or other components.

Keep exposure simple

As a cautious routine for mixed-material jewelry, remove it before swimming, showering or household cleaning. Apply perfume and other cosmetics before putting it on, and allow them to dry first. Avoid leaving it in strong sunlight or near a heat source.

Skip improvised cleaning rituals

Do not use saltwater baths, household chemicals, steam or ultrasonic equipment without specific guidance for the whole piece. Gemstones and their treatments can respond differently to cleaning methods. A personal intention-setting ritual can be meaningful without exposing the jewelry to water, salt or heat.

Store each piece separately

Use a soft pouch or a separate compartment so pieces do not rub against one another. Put jewelry away dry. When packing for travel, prevent bracelets from moving loosely among harder objects.

Check before wearing

Look for a loose clasp, damaged cord or a bead that needs attention. If something looks worn or damaged, pause wearing the bracelet and ask for advice before attempting a repair.
